David Turner has updated the GNSC trail map to add the new trail and eliminate the ones that are no longer used. At the same time, I have created a new map of all the trails using a GPS device, which is posted alongside it below.

As you can see, the hand-drawn map is pretty accurate! (Except the trail down to Concession 6. But that’s so far south that criticizing its accuracy is like complaining that Capt. Scott didn’t really know where he was going in Antarctica!)

As before, a bigger version of the map, and a printable version, are available form the Trail Maps page. If you would like to get the GPS map as a track that can be downloaded to your GPS device, let me know and I will see what I can do.

Some members have recently been asking about how to arrange for people to get together and ski. While there is no permanent schedule for group skis, there are some good options.

There is often a Ladies’ Ski at 9:30 am on Tuesdays and Fridays, starting from the parking lot. But this does not happen every time. If you are interested in a particular day, you can check with Sharon Turner at 519-986-4423.

You might be interested in skiing with people at a different time — or you might not be a lady! If so, feel free to add a comment to this post stating what kind of a skiing you are interested in and when you are available. Then other members can see your suggestion and get in touch to set something up.

Great news. This month, a new trail is being added to the GNSC empire! The trail connects the Turner property to the James property, over the fields of Megan McCrossan and (your webmaster) Michael Smart. Now you can complete a GNSC Odyssey – from the County Forest, to Turners’, then Smarts’, Jameses’, and Barneses’ and back (or the reverse) – without ever retracing your steps. To find out more and see the trail on a map, just click here to …

Have a look at the schematic map, where the McCrossan-Smart property is shaded green. Starting from the southern, Turner end, look for the new spur trail leading across Tamarac Meadow and up the hill to the corner. The trail then turns north and east across open fields, over the top of a hill, and down through an old fencerow to Hamilton Lane. After the trail turns north to parallel the road, look for a small opening that leads to Hamilton Lane opposite the James pond loop trail. (Watch for traffic!) The larger opening in the fencerow also works but is much steeper due to the road grading.

A word of caution: near the top of the hill on the McCrossan-Smart farm, there may be a ski track leading north into the old woodlot. This trail is not groomed and could be dangerous in icy conditions. So you may prefer to stay on the main groomed trail.

This new trail is an experiment for this year, and its continued existence depends on the tireless efforts of our groomers Bob and David. If you’ve tried the trail, leave a comment by clicking the link in the next line. Let us know what you think, or any suggestions you have.
