Please be advised that the trails are closed.
We have noticed that some skiers are breaking trail in the CLOSED section of the County Forest. The County Forest west of the snowmobile trail remains closed due to logging. Signs have been posted where the trails are closed yet skiers are going around the signs and closures – please respect these closures!
The following trails were freshly groomed and track-set this afternoon. We expect the skiing conditions to be excellent.
The port-a-potty has arrived at the parking lot.
This afternoon, a red truck was parked on the east side of Hamilton Lane by the entrance to the James ski trails. Skiers are reminded that parking is only allowed on the West side of Hamilton lane in order to allow the snow plows to do their job.
Exciting news! The following trails were groomed, not track set, this afternoon:
Bob James has advised that he hopes to groom his trails, the remaining Barnes trails and the Barrhead loop sometime on Tuesday Jan 16th.
There is lots of snow out there so please be patient as it makes it more challenging for the groomers. We hope to track set most of the trails later this week.
To all skiers,
A few days ago we were informed by Grey County Staff that logging was going to start in the Klondyke forest shortly. We asked for clarification of the impact to our trails for the ski season. They have just advised us that all trails in the Klondyke are closed due to the logging, and the estimated time for the work is 3 months.
We know how disappointing this will be to many of you, but want to assure you that all our other trails on the private landowner properties (Turner-Power-Gonthier/Barnes/James/Barrhead loop) will be open and maintained through the season. And of course, our members can ski free at several other clubs during the ski exchange weeks listed in the Newsletter and our website.
If there are any favourable updates from the County about the logging activity, we will inform you immediately.
Thank you for your support and understanding. Let’s hope that old man Winter gets going soon so we can have some trails to groom and ski on.
On behalf of GNSC President John Lamberts and the rest of the Board.
Happy Friday from the head of the trails. Please note that current snow on the trails is not adequate for skiing. There is currently only 2 inches on the ground and the snow quality is poor.
Please stay tuned for a ‘good conditions’ update again when skiing is a go on the private land owner trails.
Our first ski exchange for paid up GNSC members starts tomorrow! While we’re working on getting enough snow to start opening up the trails it looks like Bruce Ski’s Sawmill location has skiable trails and our exchange starts tomorrow, Jan 12, going through to Jan 20. Be sure to wear your GNSC ski tag and fill out their wavier once there.
Please check trail conditions at https://bruceskiclub.ca as conditions are variable.
Our Moonlight Ski event is scheduled for Jan 20th (weather permitting). As in the past, we would be skiing on the flatter parts of the James and Barnes trails starting at 7 p.m. And once again, Andre Gauntier and Tracy Saunders have offered the use of their facilities for a potluck après ski. Those of us who attended last year had a wonderful time! Attendance is limited, so if you are interested, please let Chris May know by email: cjmay2011@gmail.com. More details will follow as we get closer to the date.
Another important reminder also is that until further notice, there is no skiing in the county forest. There is active logging taking place and heavy equipment on the trails.
Winter is coming and the Glenelg Nordic Ski Club is gearing up for another exciting ski season! As the leaves fall and temperatures drop, the club is hard at work preparing for the upcoming winter season.
The club’s main focus at the moment is organizing for the upcoming seasons to ensure that the trails are in perfect condition for when the snow arrives.
We have the annual trail clean up event happening soon. This is a great opportunity for members of the club to come together and put in some hard work while enjoying the beautiful outdoors.
The club also encourages members to keep an eye out for the upcoming newsletter which is set to be released in October.
While snowfall can be unpredictable, the club remains hopeful for a lot of snow this year. Members are eager to hit the trails and experience the thrill of skiing through the beautiful winter landscape.
With a great community spirit, world-class trails and excellent programs, it’s no wonder that the Glenelg Nordic Ski Club is a popular choice for nordic ski enthusiasts. So, get your gear ready and get ready to hit the trails this winter with us!
Our annual boating outing is planned for Tuesday August 15th at 9:30am.
